Budget-friendly pantry organization

The biggest task was to clean and paint everything. Even the cleanest, most organized pantry will look a bit cluttered and untidy without baskets or bins of some kind.

All of the colorful food labels and different size containers just provide a lot of visual stimulation! These white storage bins are from Dollar Tree. I found this set of 12 cute metal labels on eBay, and hot glued them to the bins.

Labeling really helps everyone know where to look for things. We use these bins to store snacks for Wesley and Jason, seasoning and beverage mixes, coffee and tea, boxed mixes…they can be anything you need them to be!

On the top shelf are two Ikea seagrass baskets that hold disposable tableware for cookouts, and big bulky snack items like tortilla chips and popcorn. Once the snacks are opened, I put them in the smaller snack bins. I have three baskets on the counter shelf for storing potatoes, onions, and sweet potatoes.

Baking and cake decorating supplies are stored below in two matching thrift store baskets. I keep any unopened overflow, like extra mayo or ketchup, behind my baskets and canisters.

Plus, it makes use of every inch of the space. Another helpful way to get a beautifully organized pantry is to store most dry goods in designated containers.

This helps keep everything looking uniform. Something as affordable and simple as clear plastic containers look pretty and more cohesive than all different color boxes and canisters. I use basic plastic containers for storing cereal and dry goods, as well as recycled glass jars.

I spray painted the top of the lids to old salsa and pasta jars in Rustoleum oil rubbed bronze, and they work perfectly for smaller things like baking soda and cocoa powder. Mason jars make great storage as well. I found out parmesan cheese lids fit mason jars!

It works great for taco seasoning. I saw an idea a few years back to cut the pouring spout out of our cardboard salt canister and put it in a jar rim. I use it a lot for mixing ingredients right in the pantry.

I think it makes the pantry more useful, as well as feel more spacious. The bottom crates on casters hold rice and pastas. I stained them along with the tabletop with Minwax Jacobean stain. I purchased caster wheels for the bins and attached them to the base of the crates.

Now they can slide all the way into the deep pantry. Using the walls of utility spaces really optimizes on storage. On the pantry wall, I hung three wire baskets from the Dollar Tree with cup hooks and created a little fruit display.

I hung my apron on a nail that was conveniently sticking out of the opposite wall…maybe now I will remember to use it more often! On the door, I mounted IKEA spice racks. If you are close to an IKEA, definitely get them in store, as they are very affordable.

I stained them in the same Minwax stain. The shelves hold chalkboard spray paint spice jars upcycled from baby food jars. Its lovely to add a few pretty additions to utility spaces. It helps us enjoy all the time we spend using them. While I love for things to look pretty, I try to keep it functional, as well as beautiful!

My white farmhouse jar set and salt and pepper shakers were a Christmas gift, and they are perfect for functional decorating! I put a couple cookbooks and a thrifted vintage coffee grinder in the top shelf corner just for fun, and I added a little market fresh sign above the fruit baskets. The market fresh sign was a fun and simple project using a Sharpie Paint Pen!

You can see the tutorial here. Goldfish and Cheez-Its. I used a basket I already owned to hold all our packaged crackers. Easy peasy. For the loose crackers, I bought more containers again, only one dollar each , labeled them, and done:.

This pantry storage solution made its way to the Rachael Ray Show. See the segment below. That is a great idea! I was planning to go to Dollar Tree for my pantry storage items but I have been hesitating because of the colors.

Just not my style! Second, find a spray paint that says it works on plastic also not something I did. I love your idea for the pantry! I love it! I, too, found you from Hometalk, a little late, Jan.

Love it Erin! Your comment brightened my day 🙂 You are so right, never to late to learn and try new things. I just saw the re-post of this from My Repurposed Life and got sooooooo excited that there were large orange bins out there to be had!!!

Then I realized this post is from a year ago. Whomp whomp. The upside is — my last name is actually Wood so I will be getting those big sheets of wood paper and using them for something crafty!

I got these at the Dollar Tree and I am always there shopping for storage options. Otherwise, you could always spray paint them orange 🙂. I would really like to see photos of your own storage closet. You seem to be so organized with everything in your home.

Are all your closets neatly done like bathroom, kitchen, closets, etc.? So can you post your pantry, etc.? I love all your ideas and your such an inspiration to me!! Look forward for you emails!! God Bless Linda. You can find pictures of my pantry and closets in the following posts:. Loving your work and your ideas!

I have one question though, does the paint chip off from plastic? I wanted to try and do this to house my onions, garlic, and fruits; I am just worried that it might contaminate the food.

When I just spray painted the bins, I did notice some of the spray paint chipping off, so I sealed it with Mod Podge. I have only put items that are wrapped granola bars, etc. into the bins, but if you want to add fresh vegetables like the onions and garlic you could add a fun towel to the inside just to ease any concerns about spray paint chips getting on the food.

Great question Joey! I never thought of modge podge to seal! Love your post, I really would like some coordinated pretty in my cabinets. My only concern with all of this which looks great is that I would include a sticky or the expiration date from the packages in the containers or taped to the back.

I have to see expiration dates as I live alone and it takes a while for me to finish a product. thanks Sonia. I had bought one of those containers that you used for the pasta BEFORE I saw this post. I was inspired to reorganize my baking stuff.

I put them on a tall narrow shelf that I already had that fits perfectly in my small kitchen. I am also doing the spray painted baskets for kids snacks. That sounds awesome! I love the idea of using the containers for baking goods. Glad you found some inspiration. Enjoy your weekend Lauren! Yours came in even cheaper than mine did!

You go girl! Thanks for the honorary mention. I always try to give credit where credit is due. Thanks for the inspiration! Can you please tell me what kind of spray paint and what color you used for the orange plastic bins….

thank you. I use the boxes that the 27 packages of Austin crackers come in to make my can storage…they are sturdier than the soda 12 pack boxes and you can put more cans in them because they are open at the top.

Diane- I am interested in this. The soda boxes are a little flimsy, I was thinking of reinforcing them somehow. Where would I find them? Thanks for sharing your idea.

I will definitely look into it! Erin this all looks great! I may have to come take a look tonight and see it in person!! I love the wood paper you found!

I made sure they were fully dry before I used them.  Here is a youtube video of the process:. I took some time to arrange them how I wanted them, and it may change as I go.

But for now it ended up being just perfect. I added all of my paper supplies to the top shelf in the woven rectangle buckets. There were the perfect size. On the left side of the pantry I added treats to the second shelf in the class containers.

On the second and third shelf I added quick menu items for my kids to grab for dinner when they are on their own. Â We have A LOT of teenagers are our house and so they know this is their spot to grab something to eat as well.

The very last section is reserved for all lunch menu items so they can pack their lunches quickly. On the right side on the second shelf, I used the white plastic buckets to hold extra dinner items for me to grab and use.

I also made a bucket for hot cocoa and for popcorn we use these a lot.  The third shelf was reserved all things cereal and legume based.  The fourth shelf now has dry products such as flour, rice and flaxseed.

I use these in bulk and grabbed the large snap on containers.  The last shelf is once again reserved for all things lunch related. First, the shelves were made out of reclaimed wood. We saved the original shelves and cut them to fit the new space along the back wall.

We spaced them 18 inches apart so each shelf was fully functional. The previous owners left a cart on wheels and we rolled it in the pantry along the right side wall. I was smart enough to have the electrician add a plug in the pantry so I could get my microwave off the counter and out of site.

We lived with this configuration for a while and then it became apparent that the big cart had to go! It took up too much space and the shelves were too deep. Things were getting pushed to the back and were constantly disorganized. We opted to use some more of the reclaimed wood and configured an L shaped counter to replace the cart.

It added more storage and opened up the floor space. The bottom shelves are only 12 inches deep which are perfect for keeping things in view and organized. That fridge is definitely not what I would consider budget friendly but it contributes to my primary goal of maintaining pantry organization.

Well worth the money spent.
